WATCH: 75th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Canadian Citizenship Act

The Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect on January 1, 1947 under the government of Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Prior to this act individuals born in Canada and naturalized immigrants were classified as British subjects rather than Canadian citizens.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Canadian Citizenship Act, Senator Ratna Omidvar joined the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean and Nahid Kazemi to reflect on their journeys to becoming Canadian citizens. They shared their respective immigration stories, and explored what can be done to improve the road to citizenship for future Canadians.
