Charity

Senator Omidvar is the sponsor of Bill S- 279, the Registered Charity Board Diversity Data Collection Act. The bill will amend the Income Tax Act to to address the governance data gap in the charitable sector.

Recommended in the Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector’s report, Bill S-279 addresses governance data collection gaps, in a vital sector that employes 2.5 million people and contributes 8.2% to the GDP. The proposed legislation would ensure the annual collection and public dissemination of disaggregated diversity data on the governance of charities. It would provide tangible evidence for evaluating progress in diversity governance, allowing both the nation and the sector to assess and address any disparities. Bill S-279 also aligns with successful corporate reporting models which would foster transparency and accountability for a more inclusive and dynamic charitable sector.

The time is now for governance equity within the sector and this bill offers a straightforward yet comprehensive approach to addressing such shortcomings.
